Weight is the number everyone talks about, but the constraint that stops most people at the gate is a different one: carrier dimensions. They vary by fifteen centimetres between airlines, and a bag bought by looking only at your dog can lock you out of half the market.

Permitted sizes, airline by airline

From the most generous to the tightest. Volume indicates the real space your dog gets, which is what matters on a three-hour flight.

Fifteen centimetres of length between Lufthansa and Air Europa is not a detail: for a dachshund or any long, low dog it decides between cabin and hold.

Which carrier to buy

This is the table that matters before you spend: take a common size on the market, see how many airlines accept it.

The number to remember is 40 x 28 x 20 cm: the only size that fits within the limits of all fourteen airlines, and tighter than any single published limit. Buy by looking at one airline and you will usually end up with a bag that fails somewhere else.

There is a practical catch, and we would rather say it before you spend: that size is very rare on the market. Airline bags are cut against the limits of more generous carriers. Among the verified models, the most versatile option fits eight airlines out of fourteen.

So the practical advice depends on where you are. If you have already picked route and airline, buy to that airline's size — it is the only case where the large format is safe. If you have not decided yet, buy the shortest bag your dog tolerates: every centimetre you drop is another airline left open to you. The 55 x 40 x 23 cm format is roomier for the dog, but fits the standard limits of six airlines out of fourteen.

What airlines actually check

• Soft, not rigid. Almost all accept only soft bags in the cabin. Air France is explicit, and Iberia requires it on Air Nostrum-operated flights.
• Closed on all sides. The animal must not be able to get out, even partly, during the flight.
• Ventilated when closed. Iberia requires at least 16% of the surface of the four sides; Air Europa rejects containers that do not ventilate when shut.
• Leak-proof base. Required everywhere, and simple common sense.
• Big enough to stand and turn around. This is how staff can refuse a carrier that meets the measurements but is too small for that dog.

The mistakes that cost you the flight

• Buying the carrier after the ticket. The right order is the opposite: measure and weigh first, then choose the airline.
• Trusting the "IATA approved" label. There is no approval valid for every airline: each publishes its own dimensions, and those are what count at the desk.
• Forgetting the carrier weighs something. A bag weighs 800 g to 1.5 kg, and nearly every limit is combined.
• Not habituating the dog. An animal that cannot tolerate the bag can be refused at boarding — Lufthansa says so explicitly.
