Air France dog in cabin: weight, carrier and fees

Air France carries dogs and cats in the cabin up to 8 kg including the carrier, in a soft bag of 46 x 28 x 24 cm. Above that weight the pet travels in the hold, where snub-nosed breeds are not accepted.

At a glance

The number that counts is the total

Air France's 8 kg limit covers the animal and the carrier. A travel bag usually weighs between 800 g and 1.5 kg, so a 7 kg dog can quietly go over the limit. Weigh both together at home before you choose an airline.

The carrier must be soft-sided: rigid crates are not accepted in the cabin on Air France-operated flights.

Above 8 kg: the hold

Dogs and cats between 8 and 75 kg — crate included — must travel in the hold and have to be added to the booking at least 24 hours before departure.

Inside 24 hours, acceptance depends on airport customer service and a surcharge applies: 50% on flights within metropolitan France and the Caribbean, 25% on international flights.

Snub-nosed dogs and cats

Brachycephalic breeds — French bulldog, pug, boxer, Persian, Exotic Shorthair — are not authorised in the hold. If your dog is one of them and exceeds 8 kg with the carrier, Air France is not the right airline: the remaining options are cargo or a different carrier.

United States: CDC rules

Dogs travelling to the United States must meet the requirements of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on top of the European paperwork. Check them before buying the ticket.

Before booking

The pet space is separate from your ticket and limited per flight. Check availability, fees and documents on the airline's website before paying: a purchased ticket does not guarantee your pet gets on board.
