Austrian Airlines dog in cabin: weight, size and fees

Austrian Airlines accepts dogs and cats in the cabin up to 8 kg including the carrier. The bag must be soft, fit under the seat and measure no more than 55 x 40 x 23 cm.

A roomy allowance, but the bag must stay soft

The 118 cm total equals 55 x 40 x 23 cm. Wheels, a telescopic handle or a rigid frame can stop the carrier fitting under the seat. It must be bite-proof, leak-proof, ventilated and large enough for the animal to stand, turn and lie down naturally.

Only dogs and cats travel in the cabin. Austrian asks for two printed copies of its confirmation form and limits animals per flight, so add the pet through Manage booking or support before committing to the passenger ticket.

The fee table changes by zone

Published cabin fees are €65 on Austrian domestic flights, €80 within Europe, €105 on short intercontinental routes, €115 on medium and €125 on long haul. A ticket service fee is charged as well and varies by point of sale.

Hold prices also depend on kennel size: within Europe they are €100 up to 60 x 45 x 40 cm and €200 above it. A €150 surcharge may apply when routing through Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Geneva or Brussels.

Hold kennels and snub-nosed breeds

The hold kennel must meet IATA requirements, let the pet stand and lie naturally, have a waterproof floor, absorbent bedding, a secure door and ventilation on four sides. From 4 May 2026 Austrian limits openings to 25 x 25 mm for dogs and 19 x 19 mm for cats.

Snub-nosed dogs and cats are not accepted in the hold because of temperature and stress risk. They may use the cabin when they fit the 8 kg and carrier limits; otherwise another arrangement is needed with the airline and your vet.
