British Airways pet policy

British Airways and dogs in the cabin: what the policy actually says

This one deserves a blunt answer: British Airways does not carry pets in the cabin on any route. No exception for size, weight or cabin class. The only animals allowed on board are trained assistance dogs.

Why this page exists

"British Airways dog in cabin" is one of the most common searches among people flying to London, and the correct answer is the shortest one: you cannot. Better to know before buying the ticket than at the check-in desk.

The policy makes no distinction by weight or size: even a 3 kg dog in a compliant carrier will not be allowed in the cabin.

How your dog can still travel

The pet travels in the hold, but not as accompanied baggage: the booking is handled by specialist partners. PetAir UK, founded by veterinary surgeons, handles departures from the UK; IAG Cargo handles arrivals.

That means different timings, costs and paperwork compared with a simple booking add-on, and it needs organising weeks in advance.

Assistance dogs

Trained assistance dogs travel free of charge in the cabin on the majority of British Airways flights. Emotional support dogs are not accepted in the cabin on any BA-operated flight and travel as pets.

If your destination is the UK

To enter the United Kingdom your dog must meet the requirements of DEFRA's Pet Travel Scheme, which lets cats and dogs travel to certain UK airports without quarantine.

The UK is one of the hardest destinations in Europe for pet owners: several airlines accept animals as cargo only. It is worth comparing routes before fixing your dates.

Before booking

The pet space is separate from your ticket and limited per flight. Check availability, fees and documents on the airline's website before paying: a purchased ticket does not guarantee your pet gets on board.
